AFR Series Tubular Backwashing Filters

High capacity self cleaning filter system

AFR tubular backwashing filteration system

The AFR design is a compact version of our standard AFC style tubular backwashing filter.  Whereas each AFC filter station is mounted onto a common inlet, outlet and drain manifold with a series of valves, the AFR Automatic tubular backwashing filtration system has only two valves.

The body of the AFR contains the diverting valve, essentially isolating one station in series during the backwashing cycle.  The only other valve is the drain valve, which remains open during the backwashing sequence.

Eaton AFR vs AFC self cleaning filter system

AFR's consist of 4 to 8 filter stations, thus when compared to the AFC "manifold style" which require 3 valves per filter station (12 to 24 valves) you begin to get a better appreciation of the increased reliability the AFR style provides.  The other aspect which is readily noticed is its "footprint" which is typically only 1m2 for high-flow filtration of water-like liquids with retentions as small as 1 micron.  Refer to the picture to the right for a "footprint" size comparison.  Even if we stack the AFC style filer stations across from each other, the AFR configuration is still much more compact in addition to significantly fewer components.

Principle of Operation

AFR tubular backwashing filter system

The AFR-Series uses a circular configuration of up to eight tubular filter housings. Process fluid flows into the housing at the inlet at its base and passes across the filter media from the outside inward. Due to this flow path, contaminants collect on the outside of the filter element slowly forming a cake, removing smaller particles.

During backwash, triggered by time or pressure differential, the flow diverter inside the cleaning valve rotates to the tube to be cleaned. This closes the tube to the incoming process liquid and opens it to the atmosphere (via a drain line). The result causes outlet process liquid to flow in reverse through the element, cleaning it of contaminants and expelling them through the drain at the top of the system.  You will notice that we maintain an equilibrium of differential pressure across the filter element due to the elements patented design, thus ensuring thorough backwashing for the entire length of the filter element.

Features:

• Solids removal from 1 to 1,700 microns
• Flow rates up to 2,000 GPM (454 m3/hr.)
• Broad selection of filter media material
• Numerous automated backwash options
• Backwashing requires <2% of system volume
• Smooth pipe transitions minimize pressure drop
• Isolated backwash flow while continuing to deliver filtered product.

Service Requirements:

WATER: Minimum backwash water at 45 psig (3 bar).
AIR
: (for automatic units) 60-120 psig (4-8 bar) at 5 CFM (140 dm³/m).
ELECTRICAL
: (for automatic units) 120V AC or 240V AC at 50 or 60 Hz.
